Is Meta Advantage+ actually better than manual Lookalike?

A/B test results across 50 client accounts. The answer might surprise you: Advantage+ wins on new and small-budget accounts, but manually tiered Lookalikes still hold an 18% ROAS edge above $20K/mo.

Meta has been pushing Advantage+ Shopping hard since 2024, claiming "let the AI decide everything, you just supply creative". Does it actually beat an experienced marketer's manually-tiered Lookalikes? We ran an 8-week A/B across 50 client accounts.

Setup

  • Accounts split into 5 cohorts by monthly spend: $2K / $5K / $10K / $20K / $50K+, 10 accounts each
  • Each account: 50% budget on Advantage+ Shopping, 50% on tiered Lookalike (1% + 1-3% + 3-5%)
  • Everything else constant (same creatives, product feed, attribution window)

Key findings

Small budget (< $5K/mo): Advantage+ wins decisively

In sub-$5K/mo accounts, Advantage+ ROAS averaged 31% higher than manual Lookalikes. Reason: small budgets can't feed enough samples into multiple tiered ad sets — each set starves and the algorithm can't learn. Advantage+ consolidates everything into one ad set and gets to volume.

Mid-budget ($5K-$20K/mo): roughly even

Advantage+ ROAS 4% higher but variance is large. Our interpretation: this is the "transition zone" — winner depends on account maturity and creative quality.

Big budget ($20K+/mo): manual Lookalike pulls ahead

In $20K+/mo accounts, manual tiered Lookalike beats Advantage+ by 18% average ROAS. Why:

  • Big budgets give each Lookalike tier enough learning samples (50+ conversions/week per tier)
  • Manual tiering enables differentiated bidding by tier — high bid on Lookalike 1%, low bid on 3-5%
  • Advantage+'s black-box allocation tends to over-bet on a few high-CPM audiences at scale, losing diversification

Field recommendations

  • < $5K/mo: go straight to Advantage+ Shopping, spend the saved time on creative
  • $5K-$20K/mo: A/B with 30% of budget, decide based on 4-week data
  • $20K+/mo: lead with manual tiered Lookalikes; use Advantage+ as a "new-traffic explorer" with 15-20% of budget

How DEXUN AdWhiz helps decide

AI factors in your account's current scale, historical maturity, and creative library breadth to recommend Advantage+ or manual Lookalike — dynamically, per account. Never "always pick A" or "always pick B" — it's a function of where your account actually is.
